“If it is Peeta and me in the Games, this time we try to keep him alive.”
“The others kept Peeta alive because if he died, we knew there’d be no keeping you in an alliance.”
“When we go up, when we’re there, I promise you, Clove, I promise that I’ll never leave you. I may not have saved you when we were kids, but it’s different now. I’m going to make sure you win. You’ll go home and you’ll be loved.”
“But what about you?” I whisper.
“Just… make sure you don’t forget me, all right?”
“No-one will forget you. I promise.”
“Cross your heart?”
A weak laugh escapes me, but for the first time I’m so violently afraid of what comes next that I can’t move. I can hear the hovercraft now—it’s landing, getting so close. And then I can feel his arms go round me—they’re large and strong and he presses my body into his and I suddenly feel so incredibly safe.
“Cross my heart and hope to die,” I murmur into his chest.
We’re quiet for a moment, and then he pulls away and looks at me. “There’s one more thing.”
“What?”
“Don’t let me become a monster. I know I have to kill and I have to show the world that I’m some sort of predator, but… don’t let me change. I mean really change. I don’t want to loose it in there.”
“You won’t.”
